Public hangings — lynching or suicide? Filmmaker demands full investigation

Democracy Now!

June 22nd 2020

Amid sustained protests against anti-Blackness and police brutality, at least five men of color — four Black and one Latinx — have been found hanging in public across the U.S. in recent weeks. All five were initially deemed suicides, but community members and advocates say there's another possibility: lynching. Jacqueline Olive, director of the documentary "Always in Season," has come across dozens of similar cases dating as far back as 2005. She says these cases ought to be examined and understood as systemic phenomena — even if they are actually found to be suicides pending thorough investigation. "Is there this new trend for Black people to hang themselves publicly? There has been, historically, the stigma for Black people about hanging — and certainly hanging publicly, and hanging from trees," says Olive. "If these are suicides, then that's information that's really important to understand." #DemocracyNow Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on nearly 1,400 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday.
